Music Ministry

Myra Talkington

The Ministry of Music is one of the most vital ministries in the local church and should be viewed as a sacred office.
Your call to Music Ministry begins with a DESIRE to be used by God
to impact the local church and the world around you.
Taking the cue from choirs in Biblical times, it is clear that the role of the choir in the Church is one of ministry - not performance.  This is the crucial difference between secular choirs and choirs that serve in the Church.  Church choirs should only be singing for His glory!  Choir members are first and foremost praising God with the gift of singing, which He has gracefully bestowed on them.   This involves sacrifices of praise, which must come from willing and committed hearts.
Choir members must have an attitude of service, striving to give their very best to God.   Emphasis was placed on temple singing being directed and accompanied by trained and skilled musicians. This indicates that part of the reason for having a choir was to offer beautiful singing to the Lord.  Choirs can also help congregations appreciate a wide variety of musical styles as well as deepen their faith and love for God.   Choral singing can be a powerful means of moving members of the congregation to truly praise and worship God in spirit and in truth.  If God has blessed you with the gift of singing, give it as a living sacrifice to Him by joining this very special Ministry of Choral Music.
"Each one, as a good manager of God's different gifts, must use for the good of others
the special gift he has received from God" (1 Peter 4:10).

Three Things You Need as A Worship Leader:
A Daily Time to Be With Your Lord
With songs we lead and sing, like: “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”; “Jesus Is All the World to Me”; “Draw Me Close to You”; “Life Song”; “Oh, How I Love Jesus”; “Friend of God”; etc. ; I ask you  - Do we really have that close of a relationship? Are we spending time alone with Him on a regular basis? Reading His Word and letting that Word speak to us? Praying - without just asking for things all the time? I have to ask myself, “Who do I love the most – Jesus or my TV?” With whom do I spend the most time?    Reference: Ephesians 3:16-20
An Accountability Partner
This could be the most difficult thing we do. Who can we trust? Who will be discreet, honest, challenging, supportive, encouraging,  and honorable, who is also walking daily with the Lord? Who would you trust to be the iron that sharpens your iron and whose iron you could sharpen? As “staff” we must be careful of those who know too much about us, or feel threatened by what they had shared in an emotional conversation.  Would they share intimate details with others - and cause embarrassment or worse. Would you?    Reference: Proverbs 27:17
A Way to Get Away
We need to have an outlet which takes our minds off of the mundane, day–to-day chores of our calling and allows us to refresh our minds and hearts. We need something that gives us rest from the computer, the office duties, the responsibilities and activities related to “church work”. What makes you think your time is more necessary to His Church than His was to Creation!? God rested on the seventh day! (Exodus 31:17) Have you made time for your family? Good! Have you made time for the Lord? Great! Have you made time to refresh yourself so that you can be more effective in your service to Him?  These are all important.

As Jesus said, may we be able to say, “I have glorified You on earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.” John 17:4
